South Carolina State showed offensive resilience on the road Saturday, but costly special-teams plays and turnovers proved too much to overcome in a 49–39 loss to Charleston Southern.

The Bulldogs finished with 470 total yards, 27 first downs and 35:29 in possession time, yet the Buccaneers capitalized on explosive plays to secure the 10-point victory.

How the game was decided

Charleston Southern established control early with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Jared Echols to Mekhi Campfield, followed by Hakeem Watters’ 60-yard punt-return touchdown.

South Carolina State responded with Keely Watson’s 7-yard rushing touchdown, but the Buccaneers continued to answer.

The second quarter proved especially costly for the Bulldogs. After Mason Pickett-Hicks scored on a 10-yard run, Quay Kindell returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Charleston Southern added another touchdown connection between Echols and Campfield before halftime to take a 35–16 lead.

Watters opened the second half with a 24-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the Buccaneers ahead 42–16.

The Bulldogs refused to fold. Josh Shaw scored on rushing touchdowns of three and one yard, with Ricorian Brown adding a successful two-point conversion on the second score. A safety later brought South Carolina State within nine points at 42–33.

The numbers behind the loss

1. Special teams delivered the decisive blows.

Charleston Southern scored on a 60-yard punt return and a 98-yard kickoff return. Those two touchdowns provided 14 points without requiring the Buccaneers’ offense to drive the field.

2. Turnovers erased offensive production.

South Carolina State threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles. Charleston Southern lost just one fumble and did not throw an interception. The Bulldogs generated more yards and first downs but repeatedly gave away possessions.

3. The Bulldogs controlled possession but struggled to finish.

SC State ran 90 offensive plays and converted 11 of 21 third downs. However, the Bulldogs converted only one of four fourth-down attempts and scored on six of eight red-zone trips.

Charleston Southern needed just 55 plays to produce 305 yards and seven touchdowns, demonstrating how efficiently the Buccaneers turned big plays into points.

4. SC State’s comeback showed fight.

After trailing 42–16, the Bulldogs scored 17 consecutive points, including a safety, to cut the deficit to 42–33. Charleston Southern’s touchdown to Warren stopped the comeback attempt.

Key takeaway

South Carolina State’s offensive production was enough to compete, but explosive special-teams touchdowns and four turnovers made the difference. The Bulldogs outgained Charleston Southern by 165 yards and held a significant advantage in time of possession, yet still lost by 10.

For the Bulldogs, the lesson is clear: protecting the football and limiting explosive returns must improve if strong offensive performances are going to translate into wins.
